HOW TO SET GOALS THE RIGHT WAY
Choosing Process-Driven Goals: The Path to Sustainable Success
In the pursuit of our ambitions, we often set goals to guide our actions and measure our progress. However, not all goals are created equal. While some focus solely on the end result, others prioritize the journey and the process of growth and development. In a world driven by short term gratification, it is easy to focus on the results and outcome of a goal. However, in this article we explore the advantages of choosing process-driven goals over result-driven goals and why they offer a more sustainable path to success.
Difference Between Process vs Result Driven Goals
Result driven goals are concerned only with the end result of a target we set for ourselves. For example, I want to lose 50 pounds, I want to make $100k in a year, I want to become a professional athlete. The major flaw with this method of goal setting is that it leads to unsustainable methods and little to no guidance on how to achieve your goal. Process driven goals on the other hand, are focused on the daily habits and processes that will help you achieve your bigger goals. For example if you wanted to lose 50 pounds, a process driven goal would be to walk 30 minutes a day and eat healthy. Having a result driven goal is important as a guide to where you want to go. However, in order to achieve that goal your focus needs to shift away from the result and onto the processes you need to implement to get there. Below we explore the benefits of process driven goals and how they can help you achieve any goal you set
Systems Are Key
As James Clear, Author of the book Atomic Habits, says “You don’t rise to the level of your goals you fall to the level of your systems” By focusing on process driven goals, you begin to shift your focus away from the desired result, and onto the daily habits that will get you too that desired result. Break your big goals down into daily habits and commit to these habits regardless of how you feel. This level of discipline over a long enough period will lead to success of your goal.
Focus on Personal Development
Process-driven goals place a strong emphasis on continuous improvement and personal growth. Rather than fixating solely on the outcome, individuals are encouraged to value the journey of self-discovery and skill enhancement. This approach promotes a mindset of lifelong learning and development, where every step forward is celebrated as progress, regardless of the immediate outcome.
Sustainable Motivation
One of the shortcomings of result-driven goals is their reliance on external validation for motivation. When success is solely measured by the achievement of a specific outcome, individuals may find their motivation waning in the face of setbacks or challenges. In contrast, process-driven goals foster intrinsic motivation by focusing on the joy of the journey itself. By deriving satisfaction from the effort invested and the progress made, individuals are more likely to stay committed to their goals over the long term.
Flexibility and Adaptability
Result-driven goals often come with a rigid set of expectations, leaving little room for deviation or adjustment. In contrast, process-driven goals prioritize adaptability and flexibility. Recognizing that circumstances may change and obstacles may arise, individuals are encouraged to adjust their approach and strategies accordingly. This adaptive mindset not only enhances resilience but also increases the likelihood of success in the face of adversity.
Emphasis on Enjoyment and Fulfillment
In the pursuit of result-driven goals, individuals may become so focused on the end destination that they overlook the beauty of the journey itself. Process-driven goals, on the other hand, encourage individuals to savor every moment along the way. By finding joy and fulfillment in the process of striving and growing, individuals cultivate a deeper appreciation for their efforts and accomplishments.
Resilience in the Face of Setbacks
Setbacks and failures are an inevitable part of any journey towards success. However, individuals
with process-driven goals are better equipped to bounce back from adversity. By viewing setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth rather than insurmountable obstacles, they develop a greater sense of resilience and perseverance.
In conclusion, while result-driven goals may offer a clear endpoint, process-driven goals provide a more sustainable and fulfilling path to success. By prioritizing System building, personal development, fostering sustainable motivation, embracing flexibility, finding joy in the journey, and building resilience, individuals can navigate the ups and downs of life with confidence and purpose. So, the next time you set a goal, consider focusing on the process rather than the outcome, and watch as your journey unfolds in ways you never imagined.
